The opportunity arose for a long-awaited return visit to the west Highland line from Glasgow to Mallaig. The monotony of the motive power was more than made up for by the magnificence of the scenery and the interest of the railway working. The weather was dry and cold, and the variable sun and cloud made for a wide variety of lighting of both land and sky. The absence of leaves on most of the trees meant that much more scenery was visible than on a summer visit. Memorable!
