RTC proposed a mammoth day out (Euston – Manchester – Euston) to be hauled by the Stanier flagship No 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. This occasion could not be missed, and on a day with some sunshine the best vantage point would be the top floor of Manchester University’s Charles Street car park. Arriving in full sunshine, various units were seen at their best. However by the time the Duchess appeared in the distance at the end of Piccadilly’s Platform 13, the sun had gone. Then the distinctive Stanier hooter and the drain cocks blaring, she came towards us in the dull. Not many shots as she came past us but I have done some cropping as well. The train was a fine sight as it headed off round Manchester to be serviced at Castleton.
