Less than 12 hours before the Cumbrian Coast Pullman was due to depart, the devastating Pendolino crash closed the route on which we were due to return south. Cancellation seemed inevitable, but as we reached Preston the steam from the Duke told a different story. There were few photo opportunities for passengers on the train, so this collection only has a few record shots at Preston and Carlisle. The journey to Lancaster included 10 miles at over 70 mph and there were magnificent views from the train as it rounded the long coastline. We had been threatened with a diesel-hauled return but the Duke took us all the way back round the coast to Carnforth, over 12 hours after we set out. A magnificent day out - many thanks to all who made it possible!
