The day started well in the sunshine at Preston, where LMS 4-6-2 No 6201 Princess Elizabeth awaited the arrival of the train it was to pull via Blackburn and Settle to Carlisle. BR 4-6-2 No 71000 Duke of Gloucester slipped quietly through on the far side of the station on its way to pick up its own train at Carnforth, for Shap, Carlisle, Appleby and Hellifield. After the Princess left, I headed North and got a couple of pictures at Greenholme as the Duke attacked the climb to Shap with noise and vigour. Then over to Appleby for the arrival of the Princess, still in glorious sunshine. After she left, we heard that the Duke had failed at Penrith, so finally I headed there in time to capture her humiliating rescue by a trio of West Coast diesels.
